Coniughiamo Insieme

Let's use some activities from the pages below to practice together spelling and conjugations of simple Italian verbs in the present tense. Remember that both regular and reflexive verbs are conjugated in very similar ways.

We have three endings:

-  are  (mangiare, giocare, saltare, guardare, chiamare, etc.)
-  ere  (leggere, sedere, perdere, vedere, chiedere, etc.)
-  ire   (dormire, partire, sentire, etc.)

Practice with the links below:

REFLEXIVE VERBS

Reflective verbs are verbs in Italian that deal with a funny conjugation form. They all end with "-si" and they mean that the action a person does through the meaning of the verb falls on the person who is doing that action.  For example:

  • LAVARSI LE MANI (to wash one's hands) - Mi lavo le mani (I wash my hands)
  • SPOGLIARSI (to get undressed) - Mi spoglio la sera prima di andare a letto (I get undressed before I go to bed).
  • RIPOSARSI (to rest) - Mi riposo al pomeriggio prima di uscire (I rest in the afternoon before I go out).

As you can see, the all end with the suffix -si, which means they are reflexive verbs and they need to be conjugated in different ways from the regular verbs.  We have regular verbs from the root of these verbs - for example - lavare, spogliare, riposare.  In that case the verbs are NOT reflexive.

Let's get back to the reflexive conjugation problem.

Take the root of the verb and conjugate it in present tense by adding the reflexive pronoun like follows:

(io)           MI ......
(tu)           TI ......
(lui-Lei)    SI ......
(noi)         CI.......
(voi)         VI ......
(loro)        SI ......

and conjugate the verb the way you know it already. This is all there is to the rule (in present tense).
oh: one last consideration. Sometimes these verbs act as reciprocal, meaning we do things to each other.

example:

INCOTRARSI (meet one another) - Ci incontriamo in piazza (we meet at the square). the rule for conjugating remains the same. Just match the person with the pronoun.

Read and remember the verb list below:

  • INCONTRARSI (MEET)
  • SPOGLIARSI (GET UNDRESSED)
  • RIPOSARSI (REST)
  • PETTINARSI I CAPELLI (COMB)
  • SVEGLIARSI (WAKE UP)
  • ALZARSI (GET UP)
  • ASCIUGARSI I CAPELLI (DRY HAIR)
  • VESTIRSI (GET DRESSED)
  • CORICARSI (GO TO BED)
  • AFFRETTARSI (BE IN A HURRY)
  • FARSI LA DOCCIA (TAKE A SHOWER)
  • ALLONTANARSI (GET FAR AWAY FROM)
  • AVVICINARSI (GET CLOSER TO)
  • LAVARSI I DENTI (BRUSH TEETH)
  • LAVARSI LE MANI (WASH HANDS)
  • RADERSI (SHAVE)
